HAWTHORNE SCHOLARSHIP CHANGES LIVES

Hot Springs, Arkansas – Four National Park College (NPC) students received the Bob and Doris Hawthorne Scholarship this semester. The $1250 scholarship was awarded to Cristian Navarrete, Katherine Hardister, Jamie Lynn and Alyssa Clayton.

Hawthorne ScholarshipThe Hawthornes are passionate about giving back to the Hot Springs community and have chosen to do that by helping students who want to improve their lives with education. They established an endowment in 2009 and have since awarded over 20 scholarships worth approximately $30,000 to NPC students.

Director of Development, Sara Brown said, “I first met the Hawthornes when they were looking for ways to help students in our area. They adopted Hot Springs and the surrounding area as their home. They love Hot Springs and were so excited to help make that extra difference that our students often need to be successful. They stated that they wanted to provide help in the region in which they live and help ‘those who want to go further’.”

Navarrete plans to transfer to Arkansas Tech University to complete a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation he would like to pursue a career in aerospace engineering. His ultimate dream is to be able to work for the National Aeronautical Space Administration (NASA).

Hardister is a first generation college student from a large family. She understands the value of education and the opportunities it can offer her family. She is completing an Associate of Science degree in Education for Kindergarten through sixth grade. She plans to transfer to Henderson State University to complete her teaching degree. Her dream is to help other students realize their potential through positive classroom experiences.

Lynn is an automotive technology student and has already earned eight certificates of proficiency in Automotive Technology. She is working to complete an Associate of Applied Science in General Technology and an Associate of Science in Business. Her dream is to own and operate her own automotive business and be able to give back to the community in the same way she has been helped throughout her education.

Clayton found her passion as a young child caring for her disabled grandmother and her siblings. She is dedicated to her family and her education. Her dream is to become a nurse to “help people become better individuals.” She is working toward a degree in nursing and continues to help her mother support her siblings.

The NPC Foundation raises private donations to support our students through numerous endowed scholarships and campus improvements. Last year the Foundation raised nearly $750,000 and awarded $496,000 in scholarships and emergency aid. Endowments like the Bob and Doris Hawthorne Scholarship have been created through the generous donations of partners, community leaders, businesses and organizations in the Hot Springs community. If you would like to donate to an established fund or create a scholarship to honor the memory of a loved one, please contact Sara Brown, Director of Development, at (501)760-4129 or at sbrown@np.edu.
