Medical Lab Technology

Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) is a branch of medical science employing chemistry, physics, and biology in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of diseases. The MLT program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Studies. This program encourages men and women with an interest in science to investigate this many-faceted career field.

Medical Lab Technicians perform a wide range of laboratory procedures to assist the physician in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of disease processes. It is estimated that 75 percent of diagnoses are made based upon laboratory test results. Upon completion of the Associate of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Technology degree, you will be eligible to take a national certification examination.

You must be enrolled in MLT 2002 - Intro. To Medical Lab Technology in the spring semester that you apply to the MLT program.

For placement and participation in clinical activities you must successfully pass a criminal background check and a drug screen.

In accordance with National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) all MLT students must be provided a list of “Essential Functions,” a set of criteria utilized to determine whether an individual qualifies for admission to the program and is capable of performing in the classroom and laboratory with or without reasonable accommodations. Accommodations cannot be guaranteed in clinical facilities.

All courses required for the MLT Program must be completed with a “C” or better for continuation in or completion of the MLT Program.

The Program is designed to be a two-year course of study. The first year is devoted to acquiring prerequisite courses, many of which can be accomplished on-line. The second year of the Program consists  of classroom and on-campus laboratory activities followed by a semester of clinical facility rotations in area hospitals and clinics. 

You are prepared for entry-level employment in hospital, clinic and physician office labs. You can continue your education by obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree and advance further in your career to become a manager or lab director. Graduates of our program have gone into public health, industry, medical sales and teaching.

Medical Laboratory Technology (A.A.S.) (69 SSCH)

The Associate of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Technology is a 69 credit-hour program of study.

Because this is a specialized program, all courses required for the Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology are accepted in transfer at selected institutions. Consult your advisor regarding the articulation agreement between NPC and other institutions for further information.

Program Goals

• Students with a background in science and math who seek a service-oriented healthcare profession will be recruited in the program.
