I teach criminal justice courses online, blended, and in traditional classrooms, along with crime scene investigation lab courses. Retired Captain, Hot Springs Police Department. Over 22 years SWAT duty, 10 years as Hot Springs PD SWAT Commander. Previously a Deputy Sheriff at Clark Co (AR) Sheriff's Department, Garland County Sheriff's Department. United States Air Force veteran - Law Enforcement Specialist.
I graduated with a PhD in History from the Middle East Studies Program at the University of Arkansas in 2005. I formerly served as the Middle East historian at Ball State for eight years before arriving at NPC in 2012. I am currently the Division Chair for Social Sciences and teach classes in both World and American history.
I completed my PhD in History with a specialization in African American History from Texas Tech University in 2015. Prior to coming to National Park in August 2022, I previously taught United States History and African American Studies at Missouri State University from 2017-2022 and at TTU from 2015-2017.
I graduated with a PhD in industrial/organizational psychology from Capella University. I also received my master's degree in industrial/organizational psychology from Capella University and bachelor's degree in psychology from UALR. Here at NPC, I am the Associate Dean of Math & Sciences. I teach General Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Abnormal Psychology. Within the community, I serve on several committees such as the Friends of the Majestic Park and the Hot Springs Parks and Trails Resident Advisory Committee. I am also a founding member of the Hot Springs National Park Satellite Rotary After Hours Club. I also serve on the Board of Directors for the Cooper-Anthony Mercy Child Advocacy Center. I also volunteer for the Cooper-Anthony Mercy Child Advocacy and help with fundraising efforts as a member of the Women With a Mission Giving Society.
Here at National Park College, I am an Assistant Professor of Psychology. Prior to arriving in Hot Springs, I received the following degrees from Arkansas State University: Associate of Science (2014), Bachelor of Science in Psychology (2016), and Master of Science in Psychological Science (2019). I am currently working on a Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Psychology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, which I expect to complete in 2023. Prior experience includes working as a consultant for Applied Research Consultants (Carbondale, Illinois), as a graduate teaching assistant for Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and as a graduate assistant for Arkansas State University. I have also worked in various academic research labs, in which I managed and co-managed research projects related to social psychology, media psychology, and consumer psychology. Prior courses taught include General Psychology, Research Methods & Statistics Lab, Advanced Methods & Statistics Lab, Experimental Psychology Lab, and Quantitative Methods Lab.
Bio for Susan Millerd I received my master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and have practiced clinical mental health for 36 years prior to joining the staff at National Park College four years ago. In addition to providing mental health services on campus, I have taught Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, Introduction to Social Work, and College Success Seminar. This fall I will be offering a course in Interviewing Skills and Practices for students interested in Social Work, Human Services and Addiction Studies degrees.
