SPSFGC AWARDS 19 SCHOLARSHIPS

Hot Springs, Arkansas – National Park College (NPC) hosted a reception for the Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Garland County (SPSFGC) Thursday evening.  The Single Parent Scholarship Fund was established in 1990. Their mission is to enable single parents to attain self-sufficiency through post-secondary education.  

Single Parent Scholarship RecipientsRecipients and their families were invited to attend. Dr. John Hogan presented opening remarks and several students shared their stories. The committee approved 19 students to receive scholarship awards totaling $14,000.

Nineteen students were awarded scholarships, including: Marissa Anaya, NPC; Robert Caldwell, HSU; Lisa Evans, UAFS/NPC; Terra Ford, NPC; Kristi Freeman NPC; Chris Hall, HSU; Amanda Huggins, NPC; Tasha Jones, NPC; Donna Ludwig, HSU; J. Kristen McCauley, HSU; Goletta Morrow, NPC; Amber Orrell, NPC; Margeana Pendarvis, NPC; Jessica Russell, NPC; Misty Smith, NPC; Samantha Spradling, NPC; Lauren Stewart, NPC; Emily Turner, NPC; and Laura Woodall, NPC.  Scholarship sponsors included Arkansas Department of Education, Entergy, the Morris Foundation, Virginia Clinton Kelley Democratic Women of Garland County, the Munro Foundation, and First Presbyterian Church Women’s Group.  Other donations from the Annual Style Show for Scholarships, held in April, help fund the scholarships.

Lataschya Harris, NPC Career Pathways Director addressed the students along with SPSFGC Chair, Carla Mouton. Students enrolled in college full time received $750. Part time students received $500.  Scholarship recipient and NPC student, Misty Smith shared her experience with the scholarship program.  Smith said, “I thought speaking tonight was going to be a very simple task, but when I started thinking about all the doors it’s opened up for me, I realized that this scholarship has been about so much more than just financial support.”A=
